dev

I have a few relatives who don't live either in India or on the east coast. when they visited they brought my nephew, dev. he is fantastic, played with drum toys and straws. we went to the farmer's market and my dad made lunch.

life archive: pt 2

 This was 2011/2012.

2013 YoungArts Photography Portfolio

A while ago, someone asked me to post the photos I submitted to YoungArts last year. here they are! the first five were for the "series" portion - very personal self portraits. The second five were to show technical skill and quality. Some were old, but I tried to include as many recent photos as I could.

I hope you enjoy :^) to anyone: feel free to email me if you have other questions about YoungArts. poojazt26@gmail.com

life archive: pt 1

I recently mailed in 5 rolls of film and 3 disposable cameras for developing. I think the oldest was 3 years old. more than half of these photos feature my sister, which maybe says something about my comfort with socialization at that time.
Here's some debris from my life.

YoungArts week

There are about 20 blog posts that, for sake of chronology, should come before this, but instead of going through stuff from last spring I wanna talk about something new.

(as I type this 3:18am is turning to 3:19 am)

when I submitted a portfolio to the YoungArts program, I thought it was just an organization that gave scholarship money. I had no idea about YoungArts week or any of the regional programs or anything. I almost didn't do it, it was around 11 PM the night applications were due and I was still deciding what photos to send. I was very busy with college applications and cross country and school in general, so this slipped my mind.

Somehow I made it. And it took three tries before I was able to return the phone call, but once I did I found out I was invited to attend YoungArts week in Miami - seriously wonderful, unbelievable, soul-lifting news! the problem was that my family had a trip to India planned that perfectly interfered. It bummed me out for a long time but my dad (who probably went through more stress about this than I did) spent a long time on the phone making arrangements for me to fly back early so I could participate.

I was a finalist in photography along with seven others who are all my new obsessions. I feel silly about almost all of my interactions during that week but that is nothing new. maybe just amplified. but it doesn't matter because this week was fantastic and I am still overwhelmed. it's been two months and I took two weeks to unpack. one of my suitcases.

here are scattered photos from my time there. some were taken on the YoungArts campus, others in different locations around Miami (little Havana, Wynwood). there are photos of the people I met, exhibition night, etc.

 "snacks by the bay"

one day, my roommate, Lucy, got us cookies to share. we stayed up too much just talking.

Rita Moreno!

morning I had to leave on the early van

sometimes I'm biking home from school with my mind all dulled down (because of school) and I think about things, sometimes about nothing, but sometimes I remember that this happened - I got to do this - and it feels (I hate to say this) a bit surreal. I'm amazed and dumbstruck all over again, and very thankful to YoungArts for choosing me and my dad for making it happen.
